For many of us, bras are our best friends - they support and lift, push and boost, and keep everything where they should be. According to a study conducted in France, bras can actually make our breasts saggier, as they discourage the growth of the supporting breast tissue. Jean-Denis Rouillon, a sports medicine specialist from the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire in Besancon, started the study in
Gynecomastia, the benign enlargement of male breast tissue, is a common occurrence in adolescents as well as in middle-aged and older men. While there are several reasons why men develop breast tissue, it is usually not a health concern, often resolves on its own, and is generally treatable, according to a clinical practice article appearing in the September 20 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine NEJM. The clinical practice article, a regular NEJM feature that focuses on a case history highlighting a common clinical problem, was authored by Glenn D.
Women with dense breasts should consider further tests, including ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging MRIdepending on breast cancer risk. With gynecomastia, tissue inside the breast glands grows. This can cause female-appearing breasts. Gynecomastia guy-nuh-koh-MAS-tee-uh is swelling of the breast tissue in boys or men, caused by an imbalance of the hormones estrogen and testosterone.
