Learning how to set goals is an important life skill for teens. Teens who have goals are less likely to wander aimlessly through life. Instead, they'll be motivated to work hard to reach their greatest potential.
The most recent youth poll presented respondents aged 13 to 17 with open-ended questions meaning teens could offer any responses that came to mind about their goals in life, their career choices, and their level of concern about realizing these goals. Finishing high school and going on to college, finding a satisfying job, getting married, and raising kids are the top goals of today's teens, underscoring what Gallup Youth Surveys have consistently found in recent years: Despite profound social and technological changes, teens' life goals continue to be quite simple. A couple of responses typify many teens' basic ambitions: "[My goals are] To go to college, have a successful career, and have a healthy family," said a female high school student, who is considering a career in either computer science or nursing.
Goals are critical. When tackled correctly, they force you out of your comfort zone and help you grow more than you would without them. And, perhaps most importantly, they give us control of our destiny.
Goal Setting and celebrating achievements are the markers of successful lives. We all have goals for our lives. Some of our goals are short term, we can get them quite quickly like eating less chocolate or going to bed by 10pm. It is difficult for teens to see beyond the present. Goal setting challenges them psychologically, because it involves having to wait for a long time to see the results, which is a good lesson to teach as kids grow up. They should learn that anything good is worth working for and that it is only over time and effort that we see the true results of all of our hard work. Very few things come to us immediately.
