Michigan's Thumb is a peninsula and region of Michigan, so named because the Lower Peninsula is shaped like a mitten, and the Thumb is the area that looks like the thumb of the mitten. The counties which constitute the Thumb of Michigan area are those forming the extended peninsula that stretches into Lake Huron to the north and east and into Saginaw Bay to the west. There is no formal declaration for which of these counties are part of Michigan's Thumb.

There is always something to do or see near the tip of the Thumb. How many have you been to? Turnip Rock has been severely undercut by wave action so that its top has a significantly larger cross-section than its base.
If you've ever randomly stopped to gaze at a roadside attraction or planned a family trip around a visit to a "world's largest" item, this list is for you. There are definitely more than 83 unusual sites within the state of Michigan, but we sought out the most unusual spot in each Michigan county. Perhaps you can use our guide as a summer vacation planning tool for the next several years.

While the area has miles of shoreline, inland museums and parks offer up activities for the whole family.

After two generations of restoration, our Harbor Beach Lighthouse stands proud! The Society has spent 37 years restoring our lighthouse. The list of projects includes many that were capital intensive, including the Fresnel lens installation and rebuilding the Fog Signal Building. It has been a joy for all of us to honor your donations by doing the very best work we can while keeping our costs as low as possible, all while adhering to the best practices of lighthouse restoration.
Actually, what the pop starlet said back in the mids was that nearby Bay City, where she was born, was a "smelly little town. Too late. Certainly not, and certainly not as nice as Michigan's "thumb" actually is.
Starting in the northern region of the Thumb, Huron County is home to several communities along the shorelines and inland that offer more than one reason to visit. Bad Axe, the largest city in Huron County, is home to fairs and festivals, such as the Hatchet Festival in early June and Community Fair lasting six days towards late July. The colorful community is home to the wildly popular Cheeseburger in Caseville event held in mid-August.
