Pen pals or penpalspen-palspenfriends or pen friends are people who regularly write to each other, particularly via postal mail. Pen pals are usually strangers whose relationship is based primarily, or even solely, on their exchange of letters. Occasionally pen pals may already have a relationship that is not regularly conducted in person.
As they enter the room, I wave the big yellow envelope in the air. They know what it is, and the room comes alive with excitement. They can barely wait until I open the envelope and pass out the contents.
With a 2 pencil, I bubbled in my name, my interests, and the top countries I was interested in: Yugoslavia as it was called! It was an incredible experience to exchange pictures I still have her stoic 5th grade school picturestories from our schools, postcards from our vacations, etc. I remember the excitement of coming home from school and finding her letter on my bed: foreign stamps scattered across a colored envelope, addressed to me with her curly, distinctive handwriting.

Having a penfriend is an excellent way for students to practice their English. This can either be done the old fashioned way by sending the letter through the post office now known as snail mail for its slow pace or by e-mail using the internet. Penfriends are good as the students are communicating with people their own age in real situations.
