A lot of 3-tabs are too small to use as a starter strip. A standard size 3-tab is too short and not tall enough to use as a starter for metric shingles. I typically use starter strips.

Starter shingles are installed at the perimeter of shingle roofing systems. Starter shingles are nailed to the edges of the roof deck. They seal and stiffen the shingle to give the edges and perimeter of your roofing system better wind uplift rating and protect the edge of your roof from the elements. It helps to protect the eave and rake edge by waterproofing it and also assists in preventing shingles from blowing off because it adheres the field course and starter course together with a strong adhesive.
Successful roof projects require that the roofer follows the correct application methods. Most importantly, every minor mistake can cause leakage. Every roof repair contributes to decreased lifespan of your roof and it can be quite expensive as well!
